Like acupuncture, acupressure is a holistic form of healing developed over several thousands of years as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupressure treatment aims to balance the body's energy called Qi (chee) by using pressure to stimulate specific points on the body called Acupoints. These are the places where the body's flow of energy is at its most superficial level and therefore accessible to treatment.

Acupressure is particularly suitable for people who would like to have acupuncture but are worried or scared of needles. Acupressure is also frequently used instead of acupuncture when treating babies and small children. Finger pressure is usually applied to acupoints. However, sometimes a probe, which looks like a pen, can be used instead of finger pressure.

There are more than 2000 Acupoints, each able to restore or correct different functions of the body. TCM has described and mapped these acupoints. Acupoints are found along meridians. These are pathways for energy flow in the body. There are fourteen meridians. When energy flow along the meridians is unbalanced, a person may feel ill. Sometimes, without realising it, you might have massaged some acupoints on your temples in an attempt to relieve headaches, or you may have tried to self-massage your shoulders to try to relieve tension and stiffness.
