BSc(Hons)OstMed
Registered Osteopath
Osteopaths:
Thomas Pedersen BSc(Hons)OstMed
Education and Training
Thomas qualified in 2002 from The British College of Naturopathy & Osteopathy (now called British College of Osteopathic Medicine). Thomas is also trained in cranial osteopathy, which is extremely popular in the treatment of baby and childhood complaints, such as sleep problems, colic pain, and recurring ear infections.
Since qualifying Thomas has undertaken a number of courses focused on exercise and rehabilitation of low back pain.
Thomas has also spent several years teaching osteopathic technique at one of the London University colleges.
Awards and Achievements
Whilst training as an osteopath, Thomas was the winner of the 1st year Anatomy Prize. He also received a Grade A rating for his undergraduate dissertation: "The effect of High Velocity Thrust manipulation (HVT) to the Cervical Spine on Range of Motion".
Professional Memberships
The GOsC (General Osteopathic Council) is the governing body for osteopathic practice and training in the UK. Thomas is a member of the GOsC and practices according to a strict code of practice as set out by the Council. Thomas is a full member of The British Osteopathic Association. He has full public liability insurance. Thomas has an exemplary professional conduct and competence record.
Special Interests
Thomas is experienced in treating a wide range of conditions. He is particularly interested in prevention of musculo skeletal problems and believes in providing his patients with tools that will prevent their problems re-occurring. Thomas is also interested in treating babies and children using cranial osteopathy.
Personal Information
Thomas was born in Denmark. He came to England in 1995 and qualified as an osteopath. In his free time he is interested in travelling and learning about different cultures. He enjoys exercising especially cycling and swimming. Thomas also practises Tai Chi and Yoga. Thomas is completely fluent in English and Danish.
Abstract of Thomas's dissertation:
The effect of High Velocity Thrust manipulation (HVT) to the Cervical Spine or Range of Motion.
Objective: To investigate the effect of cervical high velocity thrust technique on cervical range of motion using the cervical range of motion goniometer.
Summary of Background Data: Neck pain is common in the general population. High velocity thrust technique is one of several techniques used by manual therapists to treat cervical spine dysfunction. Previous studies have investigated the effect of high velocity thrust on patients suffering from neck pain. Most of these studies found that the application of high velocity thrust technique resulted in an increase in cervical range of motion.
Design: A randomised, controlled pre and post-treatment comparison using an independent tester.
Setting: Exercise Physiology Laboratory, British College of Osteopathy and Naturopathy, Lief House, London NW3.
Subjects: 20 healthy asymptomatic osteopathic college students in the age range from 21 to 35 years of age (Mean 25.5 years old).
Method: CROM goniometer was used to measure neck range of motion before and after the application of bilateral single segment HVT to the cervical spine. The control group was included to investigate if there was a measurement effect. The experimental procedure in the control group was the same as in the intervention group, except in the control group subjects were asked to lie supine for a similar length of time.
Results: A significant increase in range of motion was found in flexion, lateral flexion and rotation after the application of high velocity thrust (p< 0.05, df= 19). The only vector where no change in motion was observed was in extension (p> 0.05, df= 19). In the control group no statistically significant change was found in any vector (p> 0.05, df= 9).
Conclusion: Results indicate that application of cervical high velocity thrust technique to asymptomatic subjects resulted in an increase in range of motion in all vectors except extension.
