Education and Training

Alan Szmelskyj studied at the British School of Osteopathy in London. The school is the oldest and largest provider of osteopathic education in the UK. He qualified in 1985. Alan has post-graduate accreditation in area of ergonomics, health and safety and manual handling following certified post-graduate study at Mount Vernan Hospital, Middlesex in 1991, Loughborugh University in 1992 and the Institute of Occupational Ergonomics at the University of Nottingham in 1999.

In 2004 Alan was awarded his Masters of Science degree in Psychobiology of Stress and Stress Management from the University of Surrey.

Awards and Achievements

For several years Alan was an Editorial Board member of the British Osteopathic Journal, before becoming chief editor of The Journal of Osteopathic Education and Clinical Practice. He is a former Research Fellow of the British School of Osteopathy.

Alan has tutored, lectured, supervised or examined undergraduate osteopathic students at half the UK's osteopathic schools and colleges. These include The British School of Osteopathy, British College of Osteopathic Medicine, Maidstone College of Osteopathy and The College of Osteopaths. He has taught at post-graduate level nationally and internationally to osteopaths, medical doctors and consultants, physiotherapists, nurses and other healthcare staff. He has spoken at several international specialist post-graduate conferences.

In the early 1990s Alan worked for several years in the occupational health department at Hinchingbrooke NHS Trust and Papworth NHS Trust. This work involved providing a back pain prevention advisory service. He has also provided occupational musculo-skeletal and ergonomics advice and training to large companies such as DuPont and Tesco as well as local Huntingdonshire based companies. Alan has also served as a chairman of the Osteopathic Clinical Ergonomic Association, and for several years was a committee member of The General Council and Register of Osteopaths' public relations subcommittee.

Alan has been extensively published in many peer reviewed scientific journals. His publications include articles on the osteopathic treatment of back and spinal pain, osteopathic diagnosis and management, fibromyalgia, stress management and osteopathic education. His most recent contribution was at the 2008 Advancing Osteopathy Conference held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London.

Through publications in the local press Alan has tried to provide consumer guidance and health promotion advice on avoiding repetitive strain injury, poor sitting posture and on the osteopathic management of myalgic encephelomyolitis.

In the past Alan has provided an osteopathic service at both of Ramsey's GP practices.

Alan has lectured at several post-graduate conferences.

Professional Memberships

The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) is the governing body for osteopathic practice and training in the UK. Alan is a member of the GOsC register and practices according to a strict code of practice as set out by the Council. He has full public liability insurance. Alan has an exemplary professional conduct and competence record.

He is a full member of the British Osteopathic Association (BOA) and a member of International Stress Management Association (ISMA). Alan is also a fellow of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health (RSH), the UK's largest and longest-established public health organisation.

Special Interests

By virtue of post-graduate study research and publication Alan has specialist interest and knowledge in the treatment and management of the following areas: back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, stress management and relaxation.

Personal Information

Alan has been married to Irina Szmelskyj for over 14 years. They have two young sons, Daniel, who was born in 2007 and Matthew, who was born in 2009. When not working, Alan enjoys swimming, table tennis and badminton. More leisurely pursuits include gardening, narrow boating and playing with his sons and two Burmese cats.
